Museum-specimen photographs (GBIF/Naturalis collection) show Acanthostylotella cornuta as an encrusting-to-massive sponge with a roughened, textured specimen surface.
Ecology and occurrence (general from available records)
Acanthostylotella cornuta has been recorded from low-light submarine karst habitats, including cave/canyon environments, in studies sampling demosponges and their associated prokaryotic communities. In one such study from the Orchid Island karst ecosystem (SE Taiwan), A. cornuta was among the demosponges sampled and identified using traditional taxonomic characters; associated prokaryotes were characterized via 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing.
