Phylogenetic Context
Within the order Haplosclerida (Demospongiae), molecular phylogenetic analyses using ribosomal 28S rRNA and mitochondrial markers (cox1, nad1) support multiple major clades and indicate that previously proposed higher-level taxonomic groupings can be polyphyletic.
A clade composition reported in this work includes members of the Petrosiidae (along with Niphatidae), providing molecular context for Petrosiidae taxa such as Acanthostrongylophora ashmorica.[3]
