Notes on chaetetid-type morphology (context)
In a revised treatise on fossil chaetetid-type hypercalcified demosponges, West emphasizes that the “chaetetid-type” skeleton grade is characterized by a rigid basal calcareous skeleton that is typically spicule-poor/aspicular, and discusses external skeletal features such as mamelons and astrorhizae for interpreting chaetetid skeletons. [3]
The same treatise also cautions that historical higher-level placement based on “chaetetid-type” skeleton morphology encountered problems because fossil chaetetids are often spicule-poor/absent and because superficially similar hypercalcified skeletons can occur in different groups; it also notes that subclass-level groupings used historically may be polyphyletic, so reliance on those groupings should be abandoned.
