Acanthocera fairchildi was described by Henriques and Rafael in 1992.[2] It is recognized as an accepted species within the genus Acanthocera.[2]
Historical taxonomic literature regarding the Tabanidae family, specifically the Adolpho Lutz collection, notes that the name Psalidia fairchildi Barretto, 1950, is a synonym of Dicladocera conspicua Lutz and Neiva, 1914, and should not be confused with the currently accepted Acanthocera fairchildi.[3]
