Description
Ablautus mimus, commonly known as the Arizona Prospector, is a species of robber fly in the family Asilidae.[2] It was originally described by C.R. Osten Sacken in 1877.[2]
Visual Description
Based on observations of museum specimens, Ablautus mimus exhibits the characteristic body form of the family Asilidae.[1] The specimens show a robust, elongated thorax and abdomen typical of robber flies, with well-developed legs adapted for predatory behavior. The wings are clear and extend beyond the tip of the abdomen. The head features prominent compound eyes and a characteristic mystax (a cluster of bristles) on the face, which is a diagnostic feature for many asilids.[1]
Ecology
Ablautus mimus has been recorded in association with sandy habitats.[3]
