Visual Description
Ablautus species are robber flies characterized by their robust, often hairy appearance typical of the family Asilidae. Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a compact body form with a dense covering of setae (hairs) across the thorax and abdomen, which can vary in color from pale yellowish to brownish.[1] The head features prominent, large compound eyes and a stout proboscis adapted for their predatory lifestyle.[1]
General Information
Ablautus is a genus of robber flies in the family Asilidae, first described by the entomologist Hermann Loew in 1866.[2] These flies are sometimes referred to by the common name "prospectors".[2] The genus is recognized as an accepted taxon within the Asilidae family.[2]
