Visual Description
Based on observations of museum specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Ablabesmyia prorasha exhibits the characteristic morphology of the genus Ablabesmyia. The adult is a small, delicate midge with slender, elongated legs that feature distinct dark bands or spots against a lighter background. The wings are clear and marked with characteristic dark spots, a common trait in this genus. The antennae are plumose, particularly in males, which is typical for chironomids. The overall body coloration is generally light, consistent with many species in the subfamily Tanypodinae.[1]
Distribution and Taxonomy
Ablabesmyia prorasha was described by Kobayashi and Kubota in 2002.[2] The species was identified as part of a revision of male adult Ablabesmyia from Japan, which included a key to the adult male species of the genus.[2]
