Distribution and Habitat
Ablabesmyia peleensis (Walley) is classified within the tribe Pentaneurini (subfamily Tanypodinae) [2]. Taxonomic revisions have established that Pentaneura peleensis is now correctly placed in the genus Ablabesmyia [2].
In Florida, A. peleensis has been collected and reared from various aquatic habitats, including expressway creeks (characterized by mud or sand and organic detritus bottoms, low to moderate velocity, and vegetation such as algae, Utricularia, and Sphagnum), canal-like streams, lakes (e.g., Lake Miccosuckee), and sink-hole ponds (e.g., Boliek's Pond) [2]. It has also been recorded in sand-bottomed creeks such as Peter's Creek and drainage ditches like the Rayonier Ditch [2].
