Visual Description
Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Ablabesmyia notabilis exhibits the characteristic slender, delicate body form typical of the family Chironomidae.[1] The adult specimens display long, thin legs and elongated wings that extend beyond the tip of the abdomen.[1]
Ecology and Distribution
Ablabesmyia notabilis (Skuse, 1889) was originally described as Isoplastus notabilis.[2] In studies of ephemeral earthen nursery ponds in south-eastern Australia, this species has been identified as a component of the chironomid larval community.[3] It is generally considered a minor component of such communities, occurring at low densities.[3] Larvae have been recorded appearing shortly after pond inundation, with population peaks observed within the first few weeks.[3]
