Visual Description
Ablabesmyia illinoensis is a species of midge within the family Chironomidae. Based on observations of museum specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, the adult insects exhibit the characteristic slender, delicate body form typical of chironomids. The wings are generally clear or lightly patterned, and the legs are long and slender. The antennae in males are typically plumose, a feature common in many chironomid species, while female antennae are generally simpler.[1]
Biology and Distribution
Ablabesmyia illinoensis was originally described by J.R. Malloch in 1915 as Tanypus illinoensis.[2] It is recognized as an accepted species within the genus Ablabesmyia.[2] The species is sometimes referred to by the common name "Illinois Banded-leg Midge".[2]
