Visual Description
Ablabesmyia annulata is a species of non-biting midge within the family Chironomidae. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, adult specimens exhibit the characteristic slender, delicate body form typical of the family.[1] They possess long, thin legs and wings that are held over the abdomen when at rest. The coloration is generally muted, often featuring patterns on the wings and legs that are diagnostic for the genus.[1]
Biology and Classification
Ablabesmyia annulata was originally described by Thomas Say in 1823 under the name Tanypus annulata.[2] It is currently classified within the tribe Pentaneurini of the subfamily Tanypodinae.[3] Taxonomic revisions have moved several species previously assigned to the genus Pentaneura into Ablabesmyia, including this species.[3]
