Visual Description
Museum specimens in this dataset show Aaptos ciliata as a preserved encrusting-to-massive sponge with a compact body form; the external surface appears relatively smooth to finely hispid, with small, uneven projections.
Species identity and nomenclature
GBIF lists Aaptos ciliata (Wilson, 1925) as an accepted species in Aaptos (family Suberitidae). The basionym is reported as Tuberella ciliata Wilson, 1925.
Ecology and holobiont-related context
Research focused on a congeneric Aaptos species (Aaptos suberitoides) indicates that Aaptos sponges can host complex sponge-associated prokaryotic communities, with reported enrichment/dominance of Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, and Acidobacteria.
The same line of evidence also reports detection of aaptamine-type alkaloids in sponge tissue extracts, consistent with Aaptos spp. producing aaptamines (and, in some cases, related analogs/derivatives).
